课程英文简介
Principals of English for Liberal Education: Psychology
Aims of The Course (课程目的)
English for Liberal Education: Psychology is taught as an English course but explores basic and interesting psychological issues. Its aim is to incorporate the input of psychological knowledge into the learning of the English language in a dynamic and lively manner. Students will be led to the discovery of the soul—the world of psychology displayed by means of reading, listening to, speaking and writing English. They are expected to familiarize themselves with a panorama of the discipline—a diversity of its research topics, major schools of thought and their representatives, major theories and works, and basic research methods. When obtaining knowledge of the discipline, students are encouraged to reflect upon the topics from a broader philosophical perspective and relate what has been learned to their own life. In terms of English learning, students are required to master summary writing of academic literature and develop their critical thinking skills, and speaking and presentation skills.
Course Components (课程内容)
Components of a typical unit are:
Prelude & Preparation: Warm-up thinking and discussion
Collection: Main text
Recollection: Review questions
Exploration: Group discussion
Reflection: Summary writing and free writing
Expansion: Supplementary reading
Teaching Methods (教学方式)
Class activities will involve mainly lectures, group discussion, class discussion, and class report. The main texts will be taught in the form of lecture or an examination of students’ reading comprehension through review questions. However, the instructor should encourage students to conduct more independent learning. Students should complete extensive reading assignments, writing assignments, and the term writing project which also requires research and thinking upon reading. Multi-media and the Internet will be widely used in in-class teaching and after-class consultation and supervision.
Assessment (考核办法)
Assessment method: Small writing assignments; Term writing projects
Assessment Score = Attendance & Class participation *20%+ Small writing assignments *30% + Term writing project*50%
